How to Attach Palm Leaves to a Tiki Hut

With its thatched roof and airy appearance, a tiki hut lends an exotic appeal to a yard. A tiki hut creates tropical ambiance by a swimming pool, where you can use it as a changing area, gazebo, bar or even a dining area. Once you've built the basic structure of a tiki hut, covering it with palm leaves puts the finishing touches in place. You can put palm leaves on the roof, on the sides or in both locations.

Instructions

Measure the length of the area in which you'll place the palm-leaf covering. Use a saw to cut two equal strips of plywood to the length of the measurement and a height of 2 inches. If installing the palm leaves over a large area, you can break up the length into smaller sections to make it more manageable.

Cut the palm frond stems to the length of just over 2 inches with garden shears.

Lay the plywood strip on a large, flat work area. Create a line of palm leaves with the stems touching the plywood. Base the frequency of the palm leaves on their thickness. Aim to fill in the entire area beneath the strip.

Place another piece of plywood along the top of the stems. Drive a nail through the wood that goes through the stem and into the bottom layer of plywood. Place a nail at each stem location.

Use nails to attach the plywood strips to the desired location on your tiki hut. Continue the process until all areas are covered with the palm leaves.
